U.S. DOJ and IRS
The United States federal government encourages Rebates.
DOJ: According to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ): ''REBATES MAKE BUYING A HOME LESS EXPENSIVE,'' stating further that ''Rebates can save consumers several thousand dollars in a single transaction. Offering rebates and incentives is one way that real estate brokers can compete for consumers' business, leading to lower prices to consumers.'' See infographics below.
IRS: According to the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publication 525: Taxable and Nontaxable Income, Rebates are Tax-free. The IRS states it specifically as follows: ''Cash rebates from a dealer or manufacturer for an item you buy'' is Nontaxable. The word manufacturer has been clarified to include ''auto (dealer)'' and ''home (broker)'' -- manufacturers of autos and homes, respectively.
